((( Co-Author: Prof Seaton Baxter University of Dundee and Schumacher College, not yet on ))) The map of value systems and perspectives described by Beck and Cowan 1 as “Spiral Dynamics” can serve as a tool in facilitating “transdisciplinary design dialogue.” Such dialogue will help to integrate multiple perspectives and the diverse knowledge base of different disciplines, value systems, and stakeholders. At the nexus of values, attitudes, needs, and actions, designers have the potential to act as transdisciplinary integrators and facilitators. Design is fundamental to all human activity. The transition towards sustainability is about co-creating a human civilization that flourishes within the ecological limits of the planetary life support system. Sustainability is a process of coevolution and co-design that involves diverse communities in making flexible and adaptable design decisions on local, regional, and global scales. Designing for sustainability not only requires the redesign of our habits, lifestyles, and practices, but also the way we think about design. However, in a constantly chang- ing environment, sustainability is not some ultimate endpoint, but instead is a continuous process of learning and adaptation. A complexity of dynamically interrelated ecological, social, cultural, economic, and psychologi- cal (awareness) problems interact and converge in the current crisis of our unsustainable civilization. Sustainability is rapidly becoming an issue of critical importance for designers and society as a whole.

My niece made a beautiful rag wreath by tearing up 2 gowns and adding lace -she made strips of the fabfic( raw edges) and cut them random lengths and also made a bow using all the leftover fabric ribbons and laze. The dress really needs to be seen in person in order to give you a professional opinion. Also check for anyone who collects antique clothing or linens In your town. They usually don't offer assistance with clothing since its such an iffy decision as to how to proceed. Many small museum curators (unless they have a fashion degree) will be unable to help you. I was able to find wonderful tailor and seamstress who knew good quality fabrics and taught me a lot about various fabric and thread types. By the time she reached the bottom, all of the back seams split. I once had a model in a historic fashion show walk down a long staircase in a 1920's gown. I often have to reinforce every single seam on my vintage WEARABLE clothing. The seams and threads tend to disintegrate when they hit the air and are handled after being stored for many years. Some dresses have something we realistically refer to as air rot. Thrift shops don't usually take in fragile, unwearable dresses.īe advised. Even if its just a simple bridal collage with her fabric as a backing, her wedding invitation and that beautiful photo. Your mother looks so lovely in that dress, make something from the fabric and cherish it. They were saved for the future weddings of fifteen great-granddaughters. I once made 15 pairs of wedding garters from a 1930's satin gown. When I can only salvage a small bit of fabric, I make lace christening bonnets or wedding handkerchiefs. I washed it, steamed and ironed it and put it on a mannequin in a wedding display with forty other gowns. He hated the fact that she kept it for 60 years. Well actually her SECOND husband gave it to me. One woman gave me a wedding gown made of Valencienne lace from her first marriage in 1946 that she kept in a grocery bag in her closet. If the gown was never cleaned and stored properly right after the wedding ceremony, most likely it has absorbed nicotine smoke. I have made seven christening gowns, wedding pillows and flower girl dresses from several donated wedding gowns. Often, there is a lot of beautiful, salvageable fabric available for sewing projects. If a dress is in poor physical condition, stains, large tears, I take it apart. I also worked in a museum (so don't try this yourself). Believe it or not, I have washed many a gown. I am an antique dealer and I have done several wedding gown fashion shows with gowns dating from 1900-1960. Long Range cars boost this to 250kW, but the bigger battery means a slightly lengthier charge time. Entry-level Model 3s can charge at up to 170kW, meaning a 10-80 per cent charge at a Supercharger will take around 27 minutes. Our Tesla has a quoted range of up to 344 miles, while the Long Range (from £49,990) can do up to 421 miles on a charge – both those figures tallying with the smaller of the two wheel options. That’s astonishing value when you consider the cheapest i4 costs at least £10k more. Prices have been slashed once again, so the base car now comes in at under £40,000. This, the maker says, is thanks to 360-degree acoustic glass, improved suspension bushes, seals and myriad sound-dampening materials.įor now there are just two Model 3s to choose from, with no confirmation whether a flagship Performance variant will return in time. Our car had the optional white interior, and while it was spotless for our drive, we’d think twice about specifying it if you have young kids.Īs well as boasts about interior and exterior quality, Tesla claims the Model 3 is now “whisper quiet” – stating a 30 per cent improvement in ambient noise isolation. They feel plush and comfortable, though we’d need to test them over longer distances to see how they compare with the best in the business. They’re now heated all round, and ventilated up front as standard. It maybe doesn’t feel quite as solid inside as a BMW i4, but the defined uplift in quality compliments the super-slick 15.4-inch touchscreen, which controls everything from the infotainment and mapping, to the lights and wipers. Early models were criticised for their sub-standard finish in places, but this new one can mix it with the class leaders. It’s quite telling that Tesla puts a line like that in its marketing literature. The rear has been tweaked, too, with new C-shaped light clusters that are integrated into the tailgate “to improve fit.” Externally, the most notable difference is at the front, where the slightly blobby headlights have been slimmed down for a much sharper appearance. The hotly-anticipated, updated Model 3 was revealed just before the Munich Motor Show in September, and now here we are driving arguably the most important car of the year. Since the company came to the UK (for the second time) in 2014, only one of its four core models has been given a visual nip and tuck.īut apparently a leopard can change its spots. The fact it now undercuts its main rivals by £10k or more will make it a no-brainer for business users and private buyers alike. Improved in several key areas, our previous Car of the Year immediately elevates itself back to the top of the class with dramatically improved quality, even more tech, and a more desirable look. No half-measures, most manufacturers would label this an all-new car. But the plan goes astray when Heath and Wyatt develop romantic feelings. We then moved on to “Dashing in December.” This movie follows businessman Wyatt as he tries to convince his mother and the handsome new farmhand Heath to sell his family ranch. They were old friends who didn’t talk often and then one day fell in love and then lived Happily Ever After! Sara had some blonde moments such as when she said, “There’s a lot I didn’t realize until those gifts started showing up at my doorstep…” When did she realize anything? She was going on date after date, not realizing that her BFF is completely in love with her. Despite the very romantic, boy next door plot, there was no chemistry. Daniel gave gifts that proved how much he knew about her and loved her, and Sara ignored all the signs that it was the person she had known forever sending the gifts. The movie was a series of obvious events. Surprise! It’s her best friend, Daniel, who’s had a lifelong crush on her. As Sara goes on dates, trying to find her one true love, she is also searching for her anonymous gift giver. Our second Hallmark movie was “Eight Gifts of Hanukkah.” The movie followed Sara, a dentist in an unnamed small town, as she receives gifts each night of Hanukkah from a mysterious suitor. I would rate it on a scale from “would never watch again” to “would watch again”, as “would watch again if we were really bored.” The main lead was the hottest out of the five movies, and the romance did not disgust us. The movie looked very low quality, but that is expected from a TV channel production. They fall back in love, and oh, did we mention he’s famous? He saves her talent show, then romance is really booming. She has tension with her ex, but ignores it so she can fulfill her girl-boss needs. There’s conflict, not a lot, but some that gets the story moving. She sets a goal for herself, she wants a job at a major music venue in Las Vegas. The movie had the layout that every cheesy, basic love story has. She has the perfect life, perfect job, has instant comebacks and a hot ex. If we had to use one word to describe Claire it would be girl-boss. The movie followed Claire who works as an event planner who works at her family’s hotel in Tahoe, California, as she plans the yearly talent show. We started off our Hallmark marathon with the classic “Christmas in Tahoe,” a movie about an event planner and her ex-boyfriend, a famous musician. Over a course of unusual events, they meet their soulmate, who was either a childhood friend, ex-flame, or perhaps a coincidental meeting. They are all single, or soon to be single, and were not looking for a significant other. They have their profession: doctor, journalist, event planner. The movies started off with the female – or sometimes male lead (one movie on our list was not a hallmark movie – it was a gay rodeo romance). While watching 5 Hallmark movies in a row, we realized two things: They all had the same plots and some disturbingly looked like one of our dads. The perfect plot, romance, setting, and… hot rich men. Hallmark Christmas movies are every woman’s dream.

It was this basic drill bit that enabled the early generation of nail technicians to create a countless number of beautiful sets of acrylic nails for their customers when this product dominated the nail industry in the late 1980s and up to 2000s.įine sanding band: is used to gently roughen up the natural nail surface to create a good bond between acrylics an natural nails. Sanding bands have three different levels of coarseness: fine, medium and coarse. It was and still is being used by many nail technicians because of its versatility, ease of use and relatively inexpensive to operate and are the only drill bits that could be used on natural nails due to their similarity with an emery board or a nail file. This is the oldest nail bits used in artificial nails going back as far as the late 1980’s. There are four distinct types of nail bits. nail bits specifically.īecause of a variety of available sizes and shapes, it is difficult for someone new in the industry to know their specific uses and what they can and can not do. in diameter shank nail bits can only work with nail drills that use 1/8 in. in diameter shank nail bit will only work with nail drills that accept 3/32 shanks and 1/8 in. Over time, more nail bits were made either from better materials or were developed to do more specific tasks such as doing fill-ins of no longer popular pink and white powder, cleaning removing excess of acrylics under a nail or removing of gel polish topcoat. The earliest nail drill bit that was used on natural nails was a simple mandrel or a cylindrical rod on which a sanding band is attached to do finishing touches on artificial nails. Nail drill bits owe their origin to their predecessor drill bits that were used to work on various hard materials like wood, plastic or metals. shanks are used primarily in table-top or portable nail drills. The 1/8 in shanks are used in the older nail drills and 3/32 in. The industry’s standard for the shank is either 1/8 or 3/32 inch in diameter. The shank is a small cylindrical rod compared with the head. What is a nail bit?Ī nail bit has two main sections that adjacent to each other, a shank and its head. After reading it, you should have a good understanding of what they are and how they should be used so you will be confident in making a choice of which nail bits to buy for practice or actual work. I devote this article to give you a complete explanation of all the nail bits that are commonly used. Whether you are planning to practice or work on gel polish or more advanced nail enhancements such as dipping powder, hard gel or acrylics, knowing which drill bit to practice will reduce your practice time and increase efficiency later. WinRAR is available in two languages: English and German. As of now, the software can only extract and compress RAR and ZIP files. This functionality isn’t yet available for Mac OS computers. While Windows users enjoy WinRAR’s ability to extract files from a range of formats like XZ, ARJ, ISO, TAR, CAB, and Z, among others. From there they need to send the command - unrar rar. To extract files, users need to click on Terminal and choose the file they wish to extract. Once you hit enter, the software will compress the files in the source folder to the archive defined by the user. For instance, to create a RAR file, users have to click on Applications, followed by Utilities, and then Terminal.įrom here, users must change the path to the folder containing the files they wish to compress. Nevertheless, learning a few commands can help them access the tool’s many features without much hassle. How do I use WinRAR for Mac?Ĭonsidering that WinRAR for MAC doesn’t offer a user interface but a command-line design, users may face trouble using the tool. Furthermore, WinRAR lets users split compressed files into different volumes so that users can quickly save them on multiple drives. It boasts 128-bit encryption and signature authentication technology that protects your data from any unauthorized action. In addition to this, the software works very fast and can extract and compress files quickly.įor users who often send sensitive information over the web, the WinRAR download comes with an encryption feature. Once you run the program from the Terminal windows, it automatically identifies the type of multimedia file you wish to archive and then selects the best archiving method. When you download WinRAR for macOS, you get access to a utility tool that is quite efficient at compressing files. All operations that need to be performed take place on a Terminal window and with set commands and corresponding values. However, once they learn a few commands, they’re able to use WinRAR’s available features exceptionally well. The absence of a graphical interface makes it difficult for beginners to get accustomed to the program. Instead, users have to work with a command-line design that requires users to have prior knowledge of how the software works. Unfortunately, the interface hasn’t been included in the app’s macOS version. If you look at WinRAR Windows 10, you’ll notice a simple interface with various options that let you archive, open, and backup files. What can users expect from the interface? When it comes to creating archives, WinRAR is quite efficient and offers various advanced features. It also saves transfer time and prevents users from wasting too much bandwidth. These archives don’t take too much space, so users can easily transfer them via email or other sites. WinRAR download is a compression software program that works fast to create archives. I say this from experience, and I do not claim to be a golden-eared audiophile as many well know. All else being equal, a speaker system with a response of 20Hz-20kHz (or even wider response) will be a more accurate (and usually better sounding) reproducer of music than one with a response of 40Hz-14kHz or 30Hz-17kHz. I know what he is saying is true for sound reinforcement systems (I run a 30Hz LC on my QSC amps), but as I argued with a sound reinforcement friend of mine who made a similar case, hi-fi is a different game. Indeed it is an informative post, though I would argue, respectfully, about the audibility and/or other effects that high and low frequency extension have on the sound and performance of the speakers. There are no downsides to subsonic filters. The more powerful the amp, the more important it is to have subsonic filtering. Yes, not running a subsonic filter can be the cause of burning up tweeters. Subsonic noise draws a LOT of power, causing the amp to clip. They advised using a high pass (low cut) filter with these designs. The same design was known variously as the JBL 4530, Eminence Scoop, Fane Scoop, and others. JBL also had some rear horn loaded speakers (4520, 4530) best known as "scoops". When running such a speaker, not only EQ, but subsonic filtering is vital for protecting the speaker. And amps don't have to be hung from the ceilings of auditoriums. This takes more amp power, but you can move around amps easier than speakers. BUT with the proper EQ, a 6 db boost down low, the smaller box would give the same response as a much larger box with no EQ. If you can make a 5 cubic foot speaker or a 12 cubic foot speaker both perform the same, which would you rather move around?ĮV came up with box sizes and port tunings that would have some rolloff on the bottom end, if run with no eq. With commercial "pro audio" gear you actually have to load this stuff on and off trucks, move it around. Some speakers, such as EV's commercial "step down mode" designs use a ported speaker that is smaller than you would normally use for those woofers. A USABLE subsonic filter will usually be around 30 hz with a very steep rolloff. But such a filter may only be a rolloff to zero at 3 hz-5 hz. My old Onkyo "super servo" amp had an active filter (op amp) that did the same. This is in the form of a capacitor tied to ground in the feedback loop. Many amps have subsonic filtering built in whether they say so or not. A warped record can actually damage a woofer, pushing the cone out or bottoming going in. High power pro audio gear depends on subsonic filtering to prevent speaker damage. Similar with a horn.īelow that range the horn or port is no longer loading the woofer, and cone excursion greatly increases. For example, a ported speaker tuned to 35 hz, in the region from about 30 hz on up the speaker cone movement will actually be less than at other frequencies, and most of the bass will come from the port. Many speakers, especially ported speakers, the resonance of the port and box loses control of the speaker cone movement below the port resonance. And if it does 30 hz - 17 khz +/- a few db, it is truly impressive. If a speaker is truly flat from 40 hz - 14 khz, it is a pretty good speaker. To think that speakers that don't reach 20 hz are no good is silly. There is some pipe organ music that goes lower, down to about 30 hz or so.īTW, even though human hearing is said to be 20 hz - 20 khz, many adults can't hear over 14 khz or so. Generally, you can filter out anything below 30 hz without it being audible. And not heard.įiltering out subsonic signals will not hurt the music. Subsonic signals may be something as simple as a record warp, dropping the needle on the record, or as obscure as a bass player running a subharmonic sythesizer.
